The Vehicle in Motion
Techniques of Maneuvering
Objective:
Understand and be able to transmit the knowledge of the techniques (skills) needed to maneuver the vehicle

- Skills that are needed to put the car in motion
- Positioning the car on the road to help the student driver make good informed choices
- Transferring information to the student driver through their own experiences
- Allow the student to make mistakes and self correct to gain experience (independent practice )
Backing –
- Turn head and body and drive the back of the car. Steering should be done as to control the direction of where the back of the car goes, as well giving consideration to where the front may swing. Try not to make moves in reverse to quick as the car may swing unpredictably.
- Braking and stopping are equally challenging so more pedal pressure may be necessary and greater distance should be allowed for stopping.
- Never use mirrors or cameras alone to judge distances, students should be aware of their surrounding at all times to spot potential hazards.
Steering –
- Both hands should be on the wheel at or about 10 & 2 or 9 & 3.
- Beginning drivers tend to Wander “off-track” out of their lane position.
- Students should be made aware of slight changes to the position of the car. Small movements at specific points are needed and will come with experience.
- Teach them to “Aim High” looking ahead to anticipate steering changes.
- Constant eye movement helps keep the driver aware of his vehicle’s relationship to his or her lane and the entire road.
- Lane Changes
- SMOG. Signal, Mirror (check), Observation, Go (if all is clear)
- Steer from your lane smoothly and progressively, not sharply and directly.
- When driving you can never truly know, whats out there or next to you. Could be a bike with Timmy on it.
- Steering in turns “The Turn” “The Recovery”
- We want to teach our student to turn from their lane into their lane.
- Teach them with out lines on the road first, then with lines if you can.
- Teaching them without lines first helps them appropriate when they do.
- Many residential areas don’t have lines, so they will have to drive on many streets without them.
- Recovery
- Should begin about half-way through the turn
- Two methods of recovery
- Reverse direction of hand-over hand steering
- “Controlled Slipping”
- While maintaining constant contact with the steering wheel, allow it to slip through the driver’s hand
- Tighten hold and stop slippage when wheels have straightened
- Avoid over- and under-steering
Speed Control –
- Speed is a contributing factor in approximately one-third of fatal accidents.
- Speed should be adjusted to the flow of traffic.
- Accidents likelihood is directly related to a vehicle’s deviation from the average speed of traffic.
- The Speedometer should be checked frequently

I thought class 4 was very informative. I enjoyed the class participation and I also learned some things that I didn’t know. I really like how you utilize different techniques to get the point across as everyone’s understanding may be different, just like when we teach to our students, knowing that they are individuals and we must teach accordingly. I also like how you use the 2 seats in the front as examples of your methods, although some more interaction with the class in this regard would be something to consider. Overall, all the classes have been great and I’ve gained some knowledge that I have already put into practice and I’m looking forward to the next class.
Good class I liked the idea of IPDE and how it was explained through the video we watched.

On lesson 4 we learned that transferring information to student is best thru experience n by letting the student fail so they can get better experience is a lesson learned
Classes became more understanding in ways on how to take your skills and inject in to the next generation in life to make the world a better place in driving
I feel very fortunate to be in Kye’s classroom, wherein his passion for teaching could not be more obvious. Kye
makes every effort to communicate to his students the knowledge that each has come to learn. In the case of
driving instruction, the latter could not be more important and life saving for all drivers, both new and old on the road. Profuse thank to you Kye!
Through the class, I realized that as a driving instructor was not only how to teach but also understand what students really want to learn.
Through this lesson let me know , I want to convey to the students what and how to transfer.
Good class, Importance of transmitting or reproducing knowledge in our students was emphasized.
Another good class, we as instructors shouldn’t minimize the importance of smooth control over the vehicle.
The class on lesson 4 was very good. I love the acronyms that were used example TOM – technique of maneuvering, SMOG- Signal Mirror Observation Go … these are great. Before this class I would say the words, but now I would use the acronym(s) I feel this is easier for the student to remember.
For me the video was great, it clarified and give me a better understanding of the points to consider when driving and also when taking the test. The slide on the lane changing was great, this I will definitely use to explain to the students when changing lanes. Going back to previous lesson where we learned that a lesson plan and diagrams are helpful in the lesson.
Highlighting the critical errors were excellent, this is something I tell the students, but looking at this video and making a note of these will now allow me to cover all of these rather than to rely on my memory.
Highlighting examples of the different situations in this video is very helpful in that we are able to use these familiar situations in our lessons rather than to think of a situation on the spot.
All in all this is a great video; I found it very interesting and informative and will use these examples in my daily lessons.
The class on lesson 4 was very informative. Us a instructors should understand as well every objective we want to teach. For example we must know how to appropriately tell how to do backing, Steering, Lane changing , recovery and most important speed control.
As you mention in class when you put a name it gives you a better idea that someone’s life can be in danger. From the video i liked how they point out the mistakes that students do and reason of why they fail there Road Test. Thank you for you teaching and for making it simple for us to remember and understand.
This is a excellent video. I showed it to my son because he be taking his road test soon. I also feel it should be mandatory to watch this video before any road estate so the student would be more prepared for the test.
The video was excellent. Even though it was for the state of California, the “main idea” applies to all of us. The talk about critical errors, driver comfort while driving, and the instructor’s FIRST HAND accounts of what they are seeing their students do while on the road should really be a class in itself. With enough time behind the wheel with a student (driver and in a classroom setting) there will be a pattern that astute and trained instructors will see emerging among students. Teaching to that deficit or calling constructive and critical attention to those will minimize critical errors and enhance the experience. As an instructor, being highly sensitive to these patterns and trends and how they apply can be extremely useful for impactful teaching, increased safety due to awareness, and will engage and bind the student to us as instructor naturally because of the instructor’s well-rounded approach and training.
i think this video should be mandatory for every person to watch, before the driving test, it will be very useful for everybody.
Lesson 4: It was a fun night, interactive learning. Kye breaking down ‘understanding’ and ‘maturity’ . You can’t teach what you don’t understand. And choices we make matters at the time and moment. Another great and fun class. Thank you, Kye.
Lesson #4 was a great turning point for me. Guess Im a slow learner yet,The whole Ghoti vs fish theory is starting to take root in my thoughts and how relevant to the course it is. Maturity defined as choice was a real eye opener and how it goes hand and hand with the rules of the system. Hitting something———Hitting them, was also a bell ringer for me. Knowing is not understanding is an excellent quotation. now that I understand better to what it means.Thanks Kye, for another excellent lesson. Starting to feel the challenge ,its all good stuff. and thanks your patience.
One thought that really stood out for me in Lesson 4 was the idea of hitting someone vs. getting hit. This thought I think is especially important to instill into students’ mind so that it can help them with being even more observant while driving. For example, at a stop sign, instead of just going through the motions and stopping just because it’s the rule and they are suppose to, and then going sometimes even with cars coming, they might now have the thought in their head that they can get hit and be extra careful now.
The class has been going well picked up multiple ways to teach differently and I plan on using some of the info I have been taking in on the road to see how it goes for me and the students!
Once again learned a lot of useful tips this class to apply to teaching future students, this video was awesome, definitely should watch before road tests even though this was not NY.
Class was great. Learning the meaning of Maturity, and making the choices one needs to make as a driver. Also i never noticed about a student being so focused on not hitting something that they dont realize they can also get hit. That lesson opened my eyes on how to explain that every action has a reaction.
What we discussed in the last class showed us control and choice are the most important concepts of driving. These two concepts represent the basic 6 lessons. If students understand these major concepts they will be ready to improve their driving skills by themselves. As we all know, even they get their license they don’t usually feel comfortable and ready driving alone but if students comprehend these key points they definitely feel more confident.
Thanks again, You had made the class very informative and interactive with each other. It’s really would help us later as an instructor. we could also applying your ways of teaching , able to transferring the information and skills they needed. we can also provide the necessary technique and helping them to achieve their goals as a good driver.
As usual, the video is great. These apply to not only student drivers but also to experienced drivers. There is always at least one thing that i learned from these videos. It was interesting to know that when there are more than one lanes that allow a driver to turn left, the immediate left lane must turn into the left lane, but the second left lane can turn into either middle lane or all that way right lane after turning left.
The most interesting parts of the class were learning how to make the student feel comfortable during the lessons and teaching the student not only caring about ‘you hitting others’ but also look for ‘other drivers hitting you.
